International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant

Bright Beginnings Birthing Center of RCH is proud that we have an on-staff International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant available for our community.

Our Director Of Nursing, Deborah Krohn, RN, BSN, IBCLA, believes that breastfeeding is a wonderful experience that fosters bonding between mother and baby with proven health benefits.

Debbie also hosts a Breastfeeding Support Group the second Saturday of every month. The group meets at RCH in the boardroom from 10 - 11 AM.

RCH: What qualifications do you need to be a lactation consultant?

Debbie: I have taken 95+ hours of lactation specific classes that cover breast anatomy & physiology, infant feeding development, infant oral anatomy, and how to deal with complex lactation issues. I also had to have hundreds of hours working with moms and babies prior to taking the exam. I had to pass an exam to become Certified. I must renew my Certification every 5 years with 75 hours of continuing education. I just did that in 2021.

RCH: How long have you been a consultant and what are some aspects of your role here?

Debbie: I have been an IBCLC for 9 years but have been helping moms and babies for much longer. I help to improve the outcome of breastfeeding and lactation through education and assistance to mothers and babies. I help parents and infants with issues such as painful breastfeeding, infant weight issues, low milk supply, difficulty latching, breastfeeding positions, too much milk, mastitis, nearly every conceivable aspect of breastfeeding.

I also help parents make plans for going back to work, planning for feeding when they are away from their infant, and weaning.
